3 Health Reasons To Invest In Water Purification Services

Drinking water that has not been purified can cause more harm than you might think. Drinking tap water that has not been properly treated or has added chemicals can pose the following three health risks to you and your family.

Fluoride Toxicity

As a way to help prevent cavities, tap water in most communities in the United States is treated with fluoride. As part of the Safe Drinking Water Act, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) began monitoring the amount of fluoride that goes into drinking water. They also set the maximum contaminant level (MCL) to 4.0mg/L stating anything over that could be potentially harmful. Some research even suggests fluoride can cause the following negative health effects:

  • Lower one's IQ
  • Negative effects on pineal gland
  • Negative effects on thyroid
  • Increase instances of hip fractures in the elderly

Stomach Illness

A study done in Wisconsin comparing 14 public water systems showed that tainted tap water caused over one million cases of stomach illness. The problem stems from water that is not being sanitized properly or is not treated at all before it reaches the tap. Some people who get diagnosed with viral gastroenteritis, or inflammation of the stomach and small and large intestines, can blame the water they are ingesting.

Some stomach illnesses are actually an allergic reaction to certain chemicals that are added to the drinking water. Bacteria like Salmonella and E coli can live in drinking water that has not been treated properly causing serious stomach ailments.

Increased Risk of Cancer

Some studies have shown that the amount of chlorine and by-products of chlorination in drinking water has increased the risk of bladder and rectal cancer. In fact, one study in particular found that using chlorine to treat water caused as many as 5000 cases of bladder cancer and 8000 cases of rectal cancer per year in the United States. Other contaminants in drinking water that have a possible link to cancer include:

  • Arsenic
  • Asbestos
  • Radon
  • Agricultural chemicals
  • Hazardous waste

Arsenic in particular has been linked to cancer of different parts of the body including the liver, lungs, bladder and kidneys.
